In this blog I touch upon a few topics that people commonly ask when we first meet - what does a life story ghostwriter do, how do they work, why employ one to write an autobiography? If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. Thanks for reading!
What does a life story ghostwriter do?
In a nutshell, I will write personal book about your life. Typically, I will interview you, write your story as a flowing narrative, and design and print your book with photographs and a beautiful cover.
What does 'ghostwriter' mean?
I write the story as if I was you, with your particular tone of voice and expressions such that anyone reading the book would recognise your style, personality and take on life. Although I will help shape the story, I won’t embellish or alter anything. My job is to respect what you wish to say about your life.
What sort of people come to you?
Generally, it's older people who are keen to leave a book about their lives to their children and grandchildren. Sometimes, it's younger people who want their relatives' stories recorded before it’s too late and the stories are lost forever.
Why can’t I simply write my own story?
You can – but doing this by yourself can be very challenging. Many people have great stories, but often find it difficult to write them down. A professional ghostwriter will sit with you, listen to your recollections, and guide you through the events in your life, helping to draft them into a rich, engaging story that your family and friends will want to read.
But my life isn't interesting enough...
My clients often say they haven’t changed the world or done anything special with their lives. I have found that with a little probing, unique personal stories and family events can be uncovered, stories that can explain how the family is living today. Everyone has a story to tell, the memories just need to be unlocked.
How do you get people to 'open up'?
It’s all about trust and rapport, which takes time and patience. If you wish to tell me something then I’m there to listen. But I never press for details you don’t want to reveal. Generally, people simply talk and I ask a question here and then. I often use questionnaires, but sometimes they’re not necessary. There’s plenty of opportunity to check what’s been written so if you’re not happy with something we can change or remove it.
What skills and expertise do life story ghost-writers offer?
Many, like me, have a background in writing and editing plus IT and design skills. This means I can handle every aspect of producing a book – writing, editing, proofing, design, typesetting and so on. Equally important is the ability to build trust and rapport, and an ear for a strong story, capturing what’s meaningful in a person’s life.
How long does a book usually take?
Depending on the length of the book, projects normally take between three and six months.
Why employ a life story ghostwriter?
The desire to write a book about your life may be very strong - but sometimes can feel overwhelming. If this is the case perhaps you should think about working with someone like me. I will sensitively support you through the whole book-writing project and make it a relaxing, enjoyable and life-enhancing experience.
